The priceless feeling you get when you admire Assisi from above and your gaze looks out over the valley. Mount Subasio invites experts and beginners to get an experience of paragliding or free flight.
Mount Subasio, with its 1,290-metre peak above sea level, is a spectacular flight zone. Its geomorphological features and favourable air currents make it the ideal place to practice adrenaline activities such as paragliding and free flight.
If the weather is favourable, souring over Assisi with views of Lake Trasimeno and the Apennines in the distance will be a breathtaking experience.
You can take off in different directions from the summit.
The flight zone has five descending take-off points on the north, east, south and west sides and two landing areas that can easily be reached by car or shuttle bus.
The take-off points are as follows:
Starting from Assisi, this is the first take-off you come to as you climb to the summit of Mount Subasio, about 2 kilometres from the Eremo delle Carceri.
The take-off point is marked by a sock on the left-hand side of the road, where you can leave you car and walk to the take-off point on the slope 50 metres away.
This is the perfect take-off in winter when the other take-off points are inaccessible due to snow or low clouds as it is the lowest take-off of them all.
The wind direction for this take-off is from SOUTH to SOUTH-WEST.
It is not advisable to take-off in the hottest hours in summer due to strong temperature changes.
This is the second take-off point you come to on your way up from Assisi to the summit of Subasio. It is about 4 kilometres from Eremo delle Carceri and is recognisable by the wind-sock on the left-hand side of the road near a small pine tree.
You cam comfortably leave your car on the side of the road.
The NORTH wind is best for take-off, however you need to be careful when you are in the valley as it could be stronger than at the take-off point.
We advise you not to fly too far towards Assisi as the wind could prevent you from returning to the NORTH landing (there are no other landing areas between the north handing and Assisi). When conditions are favourable with a weak wind from the NORTH, it is sometimes possible to fly past Assisi towards the landing point of Rivotorto.
Take-off EAST – 1,220 metres a.s.l.
Suitable for: paragliding
This is the third take-off point you come to on your way from Assisi up to the summit of Subasio. It is 5 kilometres away from Eremo delle Carceri on the left-hand side of a dirt track near a pedestrian path along the fence.
You can leave your car by the side of the road, cross the pedestrian path and walk 200 metres NORTH-EAST along the slop. A wind-sock marks the take-off area.
The EAST or NORTH-EAST wind is best for take-off, however you need to be careful when you are in the valley as it could be stronger than at the take-off point.
Furthermore, the wind could create turbulence during landing and strengthen due to the Venturi effect.
This is the fourth take-off point you come to on your way from Assisi up to the summit of Subasio. It lies about 7 kilometres from Eremo delle Carcere in Assisi and is marked by a wind-sock on the right-hand side of the road, with a wooden sign marked TAKE-OFF WEST.
This is the most populst take-off in the area when you take off with the wind from the WEST, NORTH-WEST and SOUTH-WEST. With a moderate wind from NORTH-WEST the San Rufino col develops a downwind in the gorge below.
Take-off SOUTH – 1,250 metres a.s.l.
Suitable for: paragliding
This is the fifth take-off point you come to on your way from Assisi up to the summit of Subasio. It lies about 9 kilometres from Eremo delle Carcere in Assisi and is marked by a wind-sock on the right-hand side of the road, with a wooden sign marked TAKE-OFF SOUTH.
Take-off is best with a wind from the SOUTH or SOUTH-EAST.
