The Assisi – Nocera Umbra itinerary is a magnificent walk that follows some of the places with strong roots in the Franciscan faith.
As sources tell us, the Man of Poverty from Assisi passed through here and on his final journey he was accompanied by knights on horseback from Assisi one month before his death in September 1226.
Many paths, splendid woods and panoramic views: that’s what this trail will offer you.
Starting from Porta Cappuccini, go along path no. 350-351 and then follow the signs for Fonte Maddalena – path no. 351 until you reach Costa di Trex.
From here, continue to Fosso Marchetto and when you get close to Ponte Marchetto and Ponte Cavaliero, two splendid mediaeval structures, you’ll be able to admire the spectacular gorge.
Continue along path no. 351 which, after about 3 kilometres, will lead you near the Church of Satriano, where each year, on the first Sunday in September, the Calvacata di Satriano [Cavalcade] re-enacts the journey of the dying St. Francis as he was accompanied back to Assisi with the help of the cavalry.
Continue along a path that rises to Passo il Termine, and then descends until it reaches a wide dirt track that leads to the right as far as the fortress, Rocca of Postignano. The construction was built on a sharp col by the counts of Postignano in the 10th century. However, today, only the ruins remain of its original, imposing structure.
From the Rocca, cut across two wide bends to descend to the outskirts of Villa di Postignano. Then follow the asphalt road to easily reach Nocera Scalo.
Walk a further 4 kilometres and you’ll come to the Centre of Nocera Umbra.
You can programme your return to Assis by train or by bus.
