The Permanent Exhibition of Geo-Palaeontology, within the Mount Subasio Park in Assisi, is divided into three halls: the first tells the story of the geological periods and processes that form a fossil, in an exhibition of fossils from different parts of the world; the theme of the second hall is Mount Subasio with local rocks and fossils; the recently inaugurated third hall has various themes, some of which are very evocative.
The exhibition was installed to champion the cultural, geological and paleontological heritage of Mount Subasio, a mountain made of calcareous rocks originally from a marine habitat that conjures up a very different landscape from what we see today. Three studies of the calcareous and marly rocks in the Umbria-Marches sequence were conducted and exhibited, taking a close look at the Corniola and Ammonitico Rosso ammonites in particular. These fossils are cephalopod molluscs that lived approximately 180 million years ago (Lower Jurassic). They are shells preserved in limestone and used by geologists to date the rocks; in other words, they are very precise clocks for dating European Jurassic rocks (Fossil Guide).
You can find the Permanent Exhibition of Geo-Paleontology in Località Cà Piombino (Assisi) and provides educational activities featuring guided tours and educational workshops for schools, families and groups to discover fossils and rocks.
