Palazzo Bonacquisti is on the southern side of the main square next to the municipal buildings.
It was built in the 16th century by Galeazzo Filippo Pomponio Bonaquisti, Count of Panzo and founding member of the Accademia del Monte, later the Accademia Properziana del Subasio. Indeed his name is engraved on the portal while the architrave above the main floor windows is inscribed with a motto alluding to the vanity of worldly goods: ‘Bona acquisita. Mundana transitoria. Momentanea vana.”
In 2007, Palazzo Bonacquisti became property of Fondazione Perugia, a privately owned not-for-profit organisation that operates in several towns in the Umbria region with the aim of preserving its territory and developing its potential.
Following an admirable restoration of the entire building and its interiors, which brought to light its magnificent decorated ceilings and ancient walls, it is now possible to visit the permanent exhibition on the first floor entitled The Face of St. Francis, which, by displaying a series of figurative works, illustrates the contribution made by the Franciscans to the cause of the Reformed Church.
The exhibition, which occupies an entire hall on the first floor of the building, has recently been expanded to include other works, thus transcending the context of the Counter-Reformation alone to provide a broader account of the figure of the Saint and his iconographic portrayal in the course of history.
