The St. Francis Marathon is an international sports event that combines sport and spirituality under the sole denominator of solidarity.
The 42 kilometres and 195 metre-long marathon is held in November with a route that touches on all the places linked to St. Francis: Assisi, Spello and Cannara, departing from near the Basilica of Saint Francis and arriving in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The slogan is “I Bless You Life”.
Part of the proceeds raised from the sale of the race bibs goes to charities operating in the area and to the Vatican City’s paediatric foundation, Fondazione Dispensario Santa Marta.
In fact, the St. Francis Marathon has a special relationship with the Vatican thanks to its collaboration with Athletica Vaticana, the first sports association founded by and located in the Vatican City State.
The first edition involving over 2,000 athletes from different parts of the world was blessed by Pope Francis.
In addition to the marathon, collateral sports events are also organised: a 10 kilometre race and a walk through the streets of Assisi. Cultural, recreational and social initiatives linked to sport and wellbeing are organised in the days before the main event.
