The Marcia delle Otto Porte (March of the Eight Gates) is an evocative race on foot held at night through the streets of the historic centre of Assisi that enables you to experience a unique sports event surrounded by the magic atmosphere of the holy town.
The Marcia delle Otto Porte is an evocative race on foot through the streets of the historic centre of Assisi that began in 2012, when the president of the Assisi Runners at the time, Francesco Lazzarini, decided to renew an old sports competition that used to be held in the town during the nineteen seventies.
The incredible setting for this event is the holy town with its streets, monuments, piazzas, churches and splendid historic buildings. However, most important of all, the idea of the event is to touch the eight gates in the historic town walls: Porta Nuova, Porta Cappuccini, Porta Perlici, Porta San Giacomo, Porta San Francesco, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sementone and Porta Moiano.
The runners have the privilege going through all the historic entrances to the town during a 7 kilometre-long route that starts and finishes in Assisi’s main central square, where all the activities for the event (registrations, awards, etc.) are held in a few town hall rooms.
The race is even more fascinating as it is held at night, giving the participants from all over Italy the opportunity of a unique experience in a magical setting.
Over the years, the Marcia delle Otto Porte has involved a large number of participants, including well-known names in Italian athletics. Today it is considered a top level sports competition and one of the most popular events in the town.
