The twinning between Assisi and Santiago de Compostela (Spain) was signed on May 8, 2008, in the spirit of spirituality and pilgrimage that the two cities share. According to tradition, Saint Francis visited Santiago following in the footsteps of the Apostle James. The Way of St. Francis and the Way of St. James are closely linked.
The agreement was therefore established to strengthen the friendship between the two entities, with the following motivation: “Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Assisi (Italy) are symbolic, cultural, and spiritual places of reference for all of humanity. Intimately linked to the figures of the Apostle James and Saint Francis, they have similar histories that shape their meaning in both the past and the present. Saint Francis himself was a pilgrim to Compostela, thereby initiating a bond that is to be revived through the union of the Way of St. James and the Way of St. Francis.” Among the objectives, the establishment of the Way of St. Francis, which will connect the two cities in both directions, is considered significant for its values and symbolism.
As icons and symbols of their respective local communities, they are also centers of important cultural, economic, and tourist activities of national and international significance. In this perspective, the two cities commit to launching programs for mutual enhancement and developing every action aimed at benefiting their populations. The two cities commit, in their respective locations, to providing adequate communication of this twinning in order to promote the associated values and knowledge for future generations.”
