Twinning partnership Between Assisi and San Francisco
The bond between Assisi and San Francisco (USA) dates back to the late 18th century, with Franciscan friars being present in the American city engaged in missions inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi.
The motivation behind the Twinning Programm
The proposal for twinning came from the United States in 1969 to strengthen the historical and spiritual bond between the two cities. After a series of exchanges and interactions based on friendship building, the twinning was officially approved on November 11, 1998, with the goal of “strengthening the historical and spiritual ties that, in the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, exist between the two cities: ties of friendship and understanding among the peoples of the world, which were part of the political program of former U.S. President Eisenhower.”
