FrancescoAn itinerary that connects some of the most significant sites of San Francesco d’Assisi’s life and preaching, offering the opportunity to relive the Franciscan experience by exploring his land.
The Via di Francesco allows pilgrims to reach Assisi following the steps of the Saint, starting from the North (Florence – Rimini – La Verna) or from the South (Rome). The route can be undertaken on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback, connecting sites that testify to the life and preaching of Francesco.
Walking along this itinerary represents a spiritual experience that responds to the desire to seek meaning in one’s own life. The route touches on many aspects of the Saint’s life, but the central site is the Sanctuary of La Verna, where he is said to have received the Sacred Stigmata.
The itinerary covers over 300 km and is divided into 13 stages. Along the route, various accommodation options are available. The first part crosses the Tuscan-Romagna forests of the Casentino Park, with ascents and descents along well-marked trails. The second part features gentler slopes and long flat stretches near populated areas.
Along the way, pilgrims encounter monasteries, basilicas, and hermitages linked to Franciscan history. The figure of Francesco symbolically accompanies the traveler until reaching Assisi, where the “Pilgrim’s Mass” is celebrated in honor of those completing the journey.
