The twinning between Assisi and Bethlehem (Palestine) was established on December 14, 1989, as a symbol of peace, brotherhood, and the spiritual bond between the birthplace of Jesus and the land of Saint Francis of Assisi. Relations between the two cities continue to be renewed over time through exchanges and joint initiatives.
Official Motivation
“The City Council of Assisi, interpreting the feelings, history, and civil and religious tradition of the city, exercising an active role of peace enhancing recognized by all, and with deep concern for the situation of injustice and violence in the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, proposes to the City of Bethlehem a twinning partnership that demonstrates Assisi’s commitment to peace, the establishment of an independent Palestinian State, coexistence with the State of Israel, and the promotion of dialogue among the great monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) in the spirit of tolerance and peaceful cooperation.”
