Armenzano is located on the east side of Mount Subasio. The castle dates back to the thirteenth century, it is in good condition and is still inhabited today in its “outer” houses.
Near the castle there is the church of St. Mary built by the Camaldolese friars in the thirteenth century.
The origin of the name of the place Armenzano comes from cattle, or “Armentum.” It is easy to imagine that the inhabitants since ancient times have been devoted mainly to cattle breeding.
It is said that St. Francis was a friend of Napoleon Earl of Umbertino Monaldi, who repeatedly welcomed the poor man within the walls of “his” castle.
For Christmas, a beautiful living nativity scene is staged there by the local tourist association.
