Rocca Maggiore

Imposing medieval fortress was built in 1365 by Cardinal Albornoz, then engaged in the submission of the main cities of the peninsula. According to tradition the top of the hill was occupied by an acropolis ever since the most ancient times, but it was destroyed in 545 by the Gothic king Totila. The fortress was rebuilt for the first time following the Assisi conquest by the imperial army led by Cristiano di Magonza (1174), in order to be again torn down again (1198) to prevent it from falling into the hands of a papal governor. The fortress built by Albornoz was extended several times with the addition of ramparts, but was devastated by the population following the unification of Italy (1859). There are impressive guest rooms with thematic restorations inspired by medieval life.
