The Porziuncola Museum is part of the itinerary for pilgrims and tourists who, from the Porziuncola, the place of Transit to the Cappella delle Rose, visit the memories of St. Francis at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and offers a place to gain greater understanding of these sites by using archive documents, plastic and graphic reconstructions. The rooms of the museum house in chronological succession the works that made St. Francis famous. In particular: the Crucifix of Giunta Pisano (1236), the first example in Italy of a crucified patiens cross monumental; St. Francis and Angels Master of San Francesco (sec. XIII); a painting depicting St. Francis attributed to Cimabue; the Madonna del Latte, a beautiful polychrome sculpture of the late fourteenth century; a fine altarpiece in glazed terracotta, masterful work by Andrea della Robbia (1475). Inside the museum you can also visit the so-called Convent, what remains of primitive cells of monks, restored recently, are currently used to host temporary exhibitions of contemporary sacred art.
